Rule Notes

Walls:
After playing Perryville on 24 August 2014 we decided that shooting over a wall was a -2 modifier.

Answer to question on forum:

Q: "Does deploying from march or field column into line or supported line take a full move, or can you move after having deployed, as you can when you are doing the opposite?"

A: Correct, it takes the entire turn to change formation from any formation into extended line or double line.

Q: "Since artillery doesn't seem to have brigade effectiveness, it never counts as 'fresh' in combat, right?"

A: Correct, artillery is not counted as fresh, worn or spent under any circumstance.

And more:

A brigade gets no movement when changing into Battle Line or Supported Line from any formation. If forming one of the line formations from one of the column formations, the front stand (or one of the two front stands for a field column) becomes the “Guide Stand”, which can pivot but not move, and the line (or front rank of a supported line) is aligned with the Guide Stand. If forming supported line from battle line, stands are moved from the battle line to become the rear rank. A line can be formed with one or both flanks refused [or advanced, surely]. A line can also advance or refuse flanks as it moves, but not when charging (no formation changes are allowed at all when charging).

A brigade gets a half move when changing into March or Field Column from any formation. For March Column, one of the stands becomes the Guide Stand and *must* make a half move, and the other stands are placed behind it. For Field Column, one of the stands becomes the Guide Stand and is one of the stands at the front of the column, then the others are placed to form the column, and then the column *may* make a half move. Nuances there that may become clearer when we play more (or they may be accidental).

Note that the instance where a Tardy movement roll forced troops to dawdle in front of my line in march column would not have happened because you can’t drop into line and march. You’d just sit in march column in your original position. So the lesson is to drop into line somewhat earlier.

Rule questions we had after experimenting with our first test game:

Charging units can fire with both ranks (Pg 24) (as can the defenders)

The rule for redeploying a line says that a brigade may not move if changing line formations, and the rules for forming march and field columns specifically say (in bold italics no less) that the brigade can make a half move.

That leaves deploying into line. A number of players on the F&F forum say that takes the whole move: http://www.fireandfury.com/phorum5/read.php?8,37584
I will ask on the Yahoo group just to be doubly sure but the omission of any bold italics in that section leads me to agree with them.(See above Answer to question on forum)
Horse artillery was artillery where the gunners rode horses – they were mostly used in support of cavalry. So most of the artillery would have been foot artillery.

Interesting ‘easy to forget rule’ mentioned in the forum: if a leader has moved in order to attach to a unit, that unit has its movement reduced by the distance the leader has moved.

From Andrew:

It appears that some of the ideas from RFF can be adapted for F and F. I like the idea of lose a stand if you get a disorder result when you are already disordered.
